Global Telecommunication Issues

Modern technologies for long-distance communication usually involve electrical and

electromagnetic technologies, such as telegraph, telephone, teleprinter, internet networks, radio,

microwave transmission, fiber optics, and communications satellites. They are the important

technology in development global communication network that helping people to share

information in very short time and make people in the world can be connected.

While developments in telecommunications are moving along in leaps and bounds throughout

the world, there are two issues in global communication network. Firstly, some developing

countries are lagging ever further behind in communication technology and infrastructure. More

than half the people living in the developing world still do not have access to a simple voice

telephone. More over new gaps are emerging between urban and rural areas in Internet access

service.

The second issue is huge traffic that can slow down the communication system. Today, there are

about 2.5 billion people used the internet and 144 billion emails are sent each day. These will

generate huge traffic in global communication system, and can be slow down the communication

performance in the next decade.

In Indonesia has the issue of communication system is more complex due to the need to reach an

extended archipelago of over 17,500 islands, 400 volcanoes, and 250 million population that

55% of population are living in java island. In rural regions, the cost of installing private lines is

often prohibitively high when compared with the revenue that can be generated. Due to this

unique of geography of Indonesia will make more complex in developing communication system

in Indonesia.

As we already knew that the science and information technology have brought tremendous

benefits for the human civilization. The world is improving better than expectation. People in the

world are becoming healthier, wealthier, better educated, more peaceful, increasingly connected,

and living longer.

Of course, science and information technology provide many answers to the global challenges,

but science and technological alone are not enough to solve our major complex problems. In the

next decade, the world will have facing more complex problems such as increasing the number

of the world’s population (7.2 billion), availability clean water, climate change, limitation of

resources, energy, and outbreaks of disease. The interdisciplinary cooperation is absolutely

necessary to create Intelligent System for solving these complex problems. Humanity needs a

global, multifaceted, general long-term view of the future with long-range goals to help it make

right decisions today for solving complex problems in next decade. It is not easy for decision

makers to make right decision today to build a brighter future. Because the information and

technology so complex and changing so rapidly. We need to build a collective intelligence from

synergies among people, software, information, and technology that continually learns from

feedback to produce just-in-time knowledge for better decisions than any one of these elements

acting alone. We need to think and act across disciplines. We have to conduct of interdisciplinary

research by teams of investigators in the Management, Technology in Knowledge, Service,

Tourism, Informatics, Business Intelligence, Social Media, and Cybernetics. We have to share

knowledge and make collaboration across disciplines to solve global problems that so complex

and multi-faceted such as access to education, climate change, energy security, and public health

related to the global communication.
